Application readiness check
What to gather before you apply, grouped by when it gets asked for, with the reason each item matters.
Applications do not usually fail on documents — they slow down on them, and a file that drifts for six weeks while paperwork trickles in reads as disorganized to the person deciding. Gathering this first is the cheapest thing you can do to improve the outcome.
The basics every lender asks for
Missing any of these stops the file before underwriting starts.
Things that get requested on the second pass
Having these ready is the difference between a two-week file and a six-week one.
Know these before the first call
You will be asked in the first ten minutes, and vague answers cost you credibility.
Only if it applies to you
Skip anything that is not relevant to your situation.
This is a preparation list, not a requirement list. What a lender actually asks for varies by lender, by product and by loan size, and the SBA itself says application contents vary. Nothing here is scored, nothing is sent anywhere, and ticking every box does not mean you will be approved.
This is preparation, not a requirement list
What a lender asks for varies by lender, by product and by loan size, and the SBA itself says application contents vary. Treat this as the superset most lenders draw from, not as a universal checklist, and expect at least one request nobody anticipated.
The items that cause the most delay
| Item | Why it stalls files |
|---|---|
| Business debt schedule | Feeds the coverage calculation directly, and lenders verify it against bank statements. An omission turns a numbers conversation into a credibility one. See debt schedule. |
| Explaining large deposits | Any unusual deposit gets questioned. Having the explanation and the document ready saves a round trip. |
| Receivables and payables aging | Routinely requested on working capital requests and rarely prepared in advance. |
| Entity documents | Surprisingly often missing, out of date, or inconsistent with the name on the bank account. |
| Equity injection source | You will be asked where the money came from, not just that it exists. See equity injection. |
Before the first call
The last group on the list is the one that costs nothing and matters most. A lender forms a view in the first ten minutes, and an owner who can state the amount, the use, and the repayment source in three clear sentences is treated differently from one who cannot.
