Why business loan applications get denied, and what to do about each reason

Declines cluster into about nine reasons. Most are fixable, several within ninety days, and the lender is required to tell you which one applied.

You are entitled to the reason

Under the Equal Credit Opportunity Act and Regulation B, a business credit applicant is entitled to a statement of the specific reasons for a denial, or notice of the right to request one. For businesses with gross revenues of $1 million or less, the reasons must be provided in writing on request. Ask. "It did not fit our credit box" is not a reason; it is an evasion.

The nine reasons, and the fix

Insufficient cash flow / DSCR below 1.15xAsk for less, ask for a longer term, retire a high-payment debt, or wait for better financialsImmediate to 12 months

Too much existing debt, or undisclosed debtConsolidate or retire. Never omit — bank statements reveal it and omission ends the file1 to 6 months

Delinquent federal debt or an unresolved lienResolve it or get on a documented payment plan. Absolute blocker for SBA1 to 6 months

The two that are not really about you

Some declines are about the lender, not the applicant.

  • Industry restrictions. Every lender maintains a list of industries it will not finance. Cannabis-adjacent businesses, firearms, adult entertainment, crypto, gambling, and sometimes trucking, restaurants, or staffing depending on the institution's loss history. This is not negotiable and it is not personal. Ask directly and early: do you lend in my NAICS code?
  • Portfolio concentration. A bank that just wrote four restaurant loans may decline the fifth regardless of quality. You will rarely be told this is the reason.

What to do in the week after a decline

  1. Get the reasons in writing

Then read them against the table above.

  2. Do not immediately apply somewhere else

A denial followed by four applications in three weeks produces a credit report that looks like distress, which makes the next decline more likely. Fix first.

  3. Ask the loan officer what they would do

Off the record, most will tell you. Many will name a specific competitor who does lend on your profile.

  4. Consider whether the product was wrong

A decline for a bank term loan is not a decline for equipment financing, invoice factoring, or a CDFI. Very often the answer is a different product rather than a different answer.

  5. Set a date to reapply

With a specific number to hit. "Later" is not a plan.

Questions people actually ask

How long should I wait to reapply after a denial?

Long enough to have changed the thing that caused it. If it was documentation, days. If it was utilization, one or two statement cycles. If it was cash flow or time in business, a quarter or more. Reapplying without a change wastes an inquiry and tells the lender you were not listening.

Does a denial go on my credit report?

The application shows as a hard inquiry. The decision itself does not appear. But lenders reading your report see the inquiry pattern, and a cluster of inquiries is read as shopping under pressure.

Can I appeal a business loan denial?

Formally, rarely. Practically, often — particularly if the denial rested on a factual misunderstanding. If the underwriter misread a one-time expense as recurring, or missed an add-back, send the correction with support and ask for reconsideration. This works more often than people expect, and it is free.
