Business loan credit score requirements, product by product

What score you need depends entirely on which product you are shopping. Here is the realistic threshold for each, and what to do if you are below it.

Reviewed and updated · How we research this

Two scores matter, and most borrowers only know about one.

Personal credit (FICO, 300 to 850)
The dominant factor for almost any small business borrowing. Lenders pull it on every owner of 20% or more.
Business credit (D&B PAYDEX, Experian Intelliscore, FICO SBSS)
Matters more as you grow. FICO SBSS in particular is used by many SBA lenders to pre-screen 7(a) applications, and it blends personal credit, business credit, and financials into a 0 to 300 score. A commonly cited screening floor is 155, though lenders set their own.

Realistic thresholds by product

Thresholds are lender policy, not law. Every one of these has exceptions in both directions.

What moves a score fastest

  1. Pay down revolving balances below 30% of the limit, then below 10%. Utilization is roughly 30% of a FICO score and it updates monthly. This is the fastest legitimate improvement available — 20 to 60 points in one or two cycles is common.
  2. Ask for credit limit increases without a hard pull. Same effect as paying down, without the cash.
  3. Dispute genuine errors. Roughly one in five reports contains an error. Bureaus have 30 days to investigate.
  4. Do not close old accounts. Age of history helps you, and closing a card raises utilization on the rest.
  5. Stop applying. Inquiries and new accounts both hurt, and both fade with time.

Building business credit deliberately

  1. Get the basics in place

An EIN, a registered entity, a business bank account, a real address and phone, and a D-U-N-S number from Dun & Bradstreet.

  2. Open trade lines that report

Many suppliers extend net-30 terms and report to the commercial bureaus. Vendor accounts are the standard on-ramp because they are easy to open and they build payment history.

  3. Pay early, not just on time

D&B's PAYDEX score rewards paying ahead of terms. Paying on the due date every time caps you around 80; paying early is what gets you higher.

  4. Add a business card that reports to commercial bureaus

Not all do, and some report to your personal file instead, which defeats the purpose. Ask before you apply.

  5. Give it eighteen months

Business credit is not fast. It is worth starting long before you need it.

Questions people actually ask

Can I get a business loan with a 550 credit score?

Yes, but the menu narrows to invoice factoring, equipment financing against a strong asset, merchant cash advances, and some CDFIs. Factoring is usually the best of those, because it is underwritten on your customers rather than on you.

Do business loans show up on my personal credit report?

It depends on the lender. Many small business lenders report only to commercial bureaus, which is why a perfectly repaid business loan sometimes does nothing for your personal score. Personal guarantees generally do not appear unless the loan defaults, at which point they certainly do.

What is FICO SBSS and why have I never heard of it?

It is a small business scoring model blending the owner's personal credit, the business's credit, and business financials into a 0 to 300 score. Many SBA lenders use it to pre-screen 7(a) applications under $500,000. You generally cannot buy your own SBSS score, which is why borrowers rarely encounter the term until a lender mentions it.
